Former Arsenal player Mertesacker talked about his current state in an interview with the In Lockdown podcast. He said: "Stay at Arsenal and become a youth coach is the best decision I have ever made."
Mertesacker said in the interview: "I always say that I am happy to stay. As a family, we have settled down. This is my favorite club, so I am happy to contribute."
"I think the key factor that made the club decide to keep me was Arteta. I think that was the year before he went to Manchester City. They were eager to keep him, but they looked for him a bit too late. I think they You might think,'We want Mertesacker to stay.'"
"Then, two weeks later, they thought of the idea of letting me be a youth coach, and it took only one conversation with my wife to be sure that was what I wanted to do."
